About This Work
GRASSLANDS was a site-specific collaboration with RUSSELL:EVANS that explored the rich, complex and beautiful landscape of the Victorian Volcanic Plains around Clunes, Central Victoria. This work represented my first major collaboration with Rebecca Russell and Ken Evans, establishing a creative partnership that would continue for years. The production involved building a hill as part of the set and delving deep into the ecological and cultural history of the grasslands landscape. Working with ecologist Dale Tonkinson as our grasslands guide, we created a show that was described as a snapshot of what this little corner of the Grasslands of the Victorian Volcanic Plains have seen. My design, production and live mixing work contributed to what was called a truly collaborative process involving not just the artistic team but the entire Clunes community. The work honored the Dja Dja Wurrung First Nations people as traditional owners while exploring the complex relationships between landscape, history, and contemporary community.
